Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair 2010 Was a Howling Success

Annette Oertling, Fair Director, did a great job of organizing ahead of time and had everything running smoothly from the start. It was great to see LaWanna Stewart again and have her expertise with certifying the students and having everyone’s records in order.  The team, including Dana Gonzalez, Andrea Walker, Alice Shiveletto, Cathy Brister and Barbara Pailet, that Annette has put together over the last few years are doing a fantastic and professional job.

The students were all bright, energetic and very polite, and a pleasure to be with. We can all be very proud of the direction our FAIR is taking since our rebirth after Katrina.

Our WBL Volunteers,  Barbara LaNasa, Christine Trevett,  Pam Rogers,  Nancy Simoneaux,  Lois Lanier, Rosemary Clark, Francoise Hocevar, Phyllis Hudson, Myrtle Dubea, Margaret Ransone and our helpers, the ever efficient and hard working  Metairie Telephone Pioneers, did another outstanding job,  ALL working more hours than they had planned.  Thanks to Harriet Aguiar-Netto for being WBL’s Science Fair Chair and organizing our part.

If there is a weak link, we need more volunteers. It is a fun job, but the hours are long if we don’t have enough volunteers.  We are all working more shifts than we would like. Put on your thinking caps and invite our friends or family to join us.  WBL’s job requires no scientific knowledge;  just knowing how to organize, be helpful, pleasant and enjoy working with Students, and having a fun day.

“A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO WBL and the Metairie Telephone Pioneers VOLUNTEERS FROM THE SCIENCE FAIR
(sent by email immediately after the Awards Ceremony)

Barbara,
Thanks for taking care of project pick up!  With your help we were saved in 2 instances.  The John Curtis student who couldn’t find his project said you told him perhaps Christian Brothers picked it up, and sure enough, they did.  So he recovered his project.  Another girl couldn’t find her project and was very upset.  When we checked the sign out sheets, it turned out that a friend had picked it up for her.  So I really appreciate your diligence in watching out for the whole process!  You (and all of the volunteers you and Harriet helped secure) were wonderful!!!
Thanks!
Annette Oertling
Nice!  Yeah team!!
Dana Gonzalez

The Telephone Pioneers were a great help in securing the Projects, when we realized the tables were going to be picked up before most of the students returned to pick up their projects.  They extended their volunteer time by 4 hours when they realized their help would be needed.

Thanks to all,
The Editor
