Child Advocacy - seeks to improve the lives of children through support of specific children's issues dealing with neglect and/or abuse; supports the New Orleans Police Department's Child Abuse Unit, Girls First, Friends of New Orleans Adolescent Hospital (NOAH) and works to make the courts more sensitive to the needs of children's safety issues and supports legislation in the best interest of children in our state/country.

~ History of WBL Connection with New Orleans Children Advocacy Center ~

Several members of WBL were active with the groups which worked for years getting the NOCAC up and running.  At the grand “Opening” involved WBL members were honored as “Founding Members”.  CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was vital in this effort.  Children’s Hospital, through the Audrey Hepburn CARE Center, now “oversees” the administration of NOCAC.

The Center is a child friendly location where abused children are interviewed by specially trained persons over closed circuit TV.

There, representatives of the Offices of the District Attorney, N.O. Police Child Abuse Section and Community Services can get needed information for their departments and make important decisions regarding the cases.

Most importantly, the children are helped by limiting the number of interview sessions.   We are sure you will find our speakers very interesting, and learn a great deal about the Center's operation.

Communications - responsible for our monthly newsletter, The Laureate.

Education - WBL is the sustaining organization for the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair. Members do all the operational work for the fair, from registering students into the data base to assigning awards to be given to the winners. In March of 2004 there were 375 students participating in the fair. Approximately 200 awards were presented to students. During the days of the fair over 150 school children came to view the exhibit. One of our students, at the International Fair in Portland, Oregon, won a 4 year $10,000 scholarship. WBL is very proud of our involvement with the fair and of the help it gives the students of the whole metropolitan area.
